Packing the hospital bag is always an exciting moment for any expectant mum. Sometimes we go as far as making sure that everything is ready and by the door even months before the expected date of delivery!

A dad's discourse: Have a little patience…

A dad's discourse: Have a little patience…

Fri, Apr 06, 2012

When I was approached to write a column for the magazine, I was a bit unsure what to write. Do dads have issues? Don’t they just sit around watching TV, waiting for food or to break up fights when mum can’t? Then, a flash of inspiration hit me, almost literally!

These biscuits were very delicious; the syrup adds another dimension to the dough and keeps them moist and very soft.

Tipping the scales

Parenting consists of a series of awkward moments. We all know the usual bunch of uncomfortable questions, like “where do babies come from?” (and you might think, especially if your kids haven’t asked you yet, that it’s a piece of cake to answer to… well, it’s not) but what happens when a child gets fixated on a subject that very closely relates to a childhood (or adulthood) trauma, dilemma or a fixation of your own?

Back to the basics – some prophetic advice on raising children

Back to the basics – some prophetic advice on raising children

Tue, Jan 31, 2012

What we find in Islam is truly a complete way of life. It covers everything, from religious rituals to spiritual advancement and from to marrying to child-raising. However we often tend to neglect these guidelines by referring to the changing of the times, the excess amount of fitna that our children are constantly surrounded by and some go to the extent of claiming these guidelines are old fashioned. We rather turn to modern day child-raising advisors, books and theories, than to the very thing that should define us as people, i.e. the deen (faith).

Algerian chicken tajine with green olives

Algerian chicken tajine with green olives

Tue, Jan 31, 2012

A staple ingredient of Mediterranean cuisine, olives are very present in Algerian cuisine. They are used in a versatile way, not only as appetizers but also marinated, added to local pies and "boureks" or to stews and gravies to bring more flavour.
