Cordelia Gaffar
Since the age of nine, I have been captivated by literature and composed poetry. During high school, I spent sleepless night reading and memorizing Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe and Voltaire. While writing has always been my passion, I studied French and Philosophy at the University of Vermont on track to become an international attorney. However, during my tenure at the University of Vermont, my mother who suffered renal complications, fell completely ill and I left school. For several years I stayed home to attend to my aging mother and father working full-time. When they passed, I was left searching for truth, the meaning of life and the correct way to worship God and found Islam. I then returned to my studies and became an accountant and wife.
After working for a few years, we decided to home school. For the past five years, I have dedicated myself to educating our four children. I enjoy reading and writing about topics close to my heart: holistic living, Islamic traditions, and nurturing and healing through nutrition. A few of my articles have been published in the Muslim Link newspaper but am saving the best for the book that insha'Allah one day will be published.
Reshaping My Argument against Public School
Tue, Oct 04, 2011
Our job as parents is simply to SEE our children for WHO they are and educate (educare Latin to lead or bring up) each accordingly. We cannot give them perspective no matter how we try. At some point it is their creation. However, we can help them shape it over time once they are secure in who and how they are.

Making better food choices

As a practicing Muslim, I believe that we should weigh our purchasing options and in turn our purchasing power. There is so much information today about what is ‘good’ for us. But to really understand what our bodies need we must start from our humble beginnings.

Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem I am so very excited to welcome another Shaban and Insha’Allah another Ramadan. For me and my family it has truly come to be a time of peace and quiet. We have a peace in our lives and a quiet in our hearts. The rest of the year we have so much hustle and bustle but not in Ramadan.

Challenges during pregnancy
Wed, Jul 27, 2011
Pregnancy is the first stage in our journey to motherhood. Reflect on yours or if you are pregnant for the first time now, how are you feeling? Research proves that the more out of sync you are with your body, the worse the onset of nausea in the first trimester. This is the first opportunity to become in harmony with yourself and your child.

Living in Harmony with Your Body, Your Children and Your Lord
Wed, Jul 27, 2011
Whenever you ask for advice on weaning, you are given a plethora of “old wives tales” or homeopathic “remedies”. Not the least of which are: cabbage leaf in your bra, sage tea to reduce the flow of milk, lemon on your nipples, salt or anything black and say it hurts. And the list goes on… Then there are the methodical ones, who recommend if you want to stop by a certain age start 6 months to a year ahead of from the first table feeding. While these suggestions are very scientific they are not always in tune with your or your child’s emotions.
