Sumaiya Umm Imran (Editor)

I am a Sociology graduate and worked as a mentor and teacher (primary, secondary & AS level) for a couple of years. Alhamdulillah I am married and been blessed with three children. Writing is my passion and I try to write on a regular basis at http://sumaiyasreflection.blogspot.com/

My goal is to be a better Muslim by being a better wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend inshaAllah. I am very passionate about this magazine. I hope Insha-Allah through this magazine we will be able to raise our children as good Muslims and leave a legacy of ongoing charity (sadaqa jariya). May Allah (SWT) accept this humble deed, ameen.

Chocolate cake with caramel cream

Chocolate cake with caramel cream

Wed, Jul 27, 2011

This is a very easy recipe which can be quite a popular cake for any gathering. My mum-in-law makes yummy cakes and I have learned quite a lot from her recipes. This one is inspired by one of her cakes which I thoroughly enjoyed eating every bit of it as it had caramel in it ! From my experience, chocolate cakes are liked by almost everyone. So do enjoy making and serving this delicious cake insha-Allah. This one can serve up to 12 people.

Chicken biryani

Chicken biryani

Wed, Jul 27, 2011

Chicken biryani is my all time favourite. I love making this recipe whenever I get chance especially for guests. You can even make it one day early to save you from hassle and it actually tastes better the next day. You can serve this biryani with mint yoghurt and a salad of cucumber, tomatoes and red onion chopped very finely.

Every child is unique

Every child is unique

Wed, Jul 27, 2011

As parents, we have a natural tendency to compare our skills and our children’s abilities to those of others. As mothers, the tendency to compare our children with others is more pronounced. We feel disappointed when we hear other mothers boasting that their newborns are already sleeping through the night while our one doesn’t. We also tend to compare our newborn baby’s behaviour with that of our first born.

Review of the Napsack carrier

Review of the Napsack carrier

Wed, Jul 27, 2011

Baby carriers have been used for centuries. Babies are able to observe the world from the security of their parent’s chest, hip or back and parents enjoy the freedom and convenience of a comfortable carrier. I bought napsack carrier to carry my baby daughter a couple of months ago at the Baby show at the London Excel. It is my first experience with a Mei Tai and I love using it alhamdulillah.

Lansinoh breastpads for nursing mums

Lansinoh breastpads for nursing mums

Wed, Oct 05, 2011

I have tried so many different brands and these beat them all. The pads are very comfortable, invisible under clothes and don't slip, move or displace. They hold a lot of milk, but do not get bulky like some of the other brands I have used.

Birth and pregnancy of Maryam AS

Birth and pregnancy of Maryam AS

Thu, Oct 06, 2011

Maryam (AS) is one of the best women mentioned in the Quran. Allah (SWT) has chosen her to be the mother of prophet ‘Isa (AS). A whole chapter in the Qur’an is named Maryam. She was born in chaotic times, when the Jewish people were eagerly waiting for the Messiah (saviour). She is from the family of ‘Imran which is also one of the blessed families mentioned in the Qur’an. Like her own birth story, her one was quite a special one too.

Blessed Brides: A great project

Blessed Brides: A great project

Tue, Jan 31, 2012

We all love to hold on to some very special possessions in your life. Our bridal dresses are one of them. However, for most of us mothers we may never be able to fit in that beautiful and elegant dress anymore. Even if we manage to fit in that dress, we may end up looking over dressed for any occasion!

Review of Discipline without Disrespecting

Review of Discipline without Disrespecting

This is an excellent parenting e-book written by Grandma Jeddah. She is a teacher who has taught hundreds of students over 30 years, a mother of 11 children and grandmother of 10. Grandma Jeddah has gained material knowledge as well as practical experience that can help make discipline easier for parents and children. Being a mother of three children all under 4, I have read quite a lot of parenting books to learn more about effective parenting skills.

Review of Siratt LifeBook 2012

Thu, Feb 02, 2012

Every year I keep a diary and try to write my thoughts down almost every single day. I love reading them later especially at the end of the year, sometimes feeling good with what I have achieved throughout the year Alhamdulillah and sometimes feeling sad thinking how I could have done more but missed the chance to do so. Since 2010 I have been using Siratt LifeBook and mashallah never looked back.

Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes and how she came to tell them

The book is attractively presented, with good quality binding on the hardback edition and well printed colour plates. You certainly will feel that this is a book your child will be able to grow up with and pass on to his or her own offspring as a treasured heirloom insha-Allah.

How to write a birth plan

Congratulations on your pregnancy! May Allah (SWT) bless you with a healthy and easy pregnancy and birth. This is the perfect time to start researching on birth and prepare for a good, natural birth insha-Allah. One way you can start your preparation is to think seriously about what sort of birth you would like to have and writing your birth plan accordingly. So what is a birth plan?
